Foreign body in the oesophagus

Types of f.B :-

In children: coins and buttons.

In adults: fish and meet bone.

In eldery: dentures and lump of meat.

In mentally retarded and prisoners: razors ,pins and needles.

Sites for F.B impact:-

  1. At the upper end below cricopharyngeus)
  2. Sites of anatomical constrictions.
  3. Sites of previous stricture.

Clinical picture:-

  • Dysphagia and regurgitation of food.
  • Retrosternal dull pain.

Complications:-

  • Perforation.
  • Ulceration and stenosis.
  • TOF.

Investigations:-

  • X_ray neck and chest.
  • Oesophagoscopy.

Treatment:-

  1. Removal by oesophagoscope under general anesthesia.
  2. If there is perforation, external approach is done.
